Victoria
Victoria, Australia’s smallest mainland state is situated in the south-eastern corner of the continent. With a population of 5 million it is the country’s most densely populated state.
Victoria’s Greenhouse Strategy, launched in 2002, set targets to reduce municipal energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and was intended to lay the foundations for further action. Victoria’s EPA regulations are one of the first global examples of greenhouse issues being managed through environmental legislation.
In 2004, the Victorian Government clearly signalled its support for the development and implementation of a national emissions trading scheme. The state government also released the Greenhouse Challenge for Energy position paper which set out a policy package to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector.
The state government is also actively supporting R&D into geo-sequestration and is a member of the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF) – an international initiative that aims to make geo-sequestration broadly available.
