Starbucks

Starbucks is the leading retailer, roaster and brand of specialty coffee in the world, with more than 9,000 retail locations in 34 countries outside of the U.S. The Company is committed to offering the highest quality coffee while conducting its business in ways that produce social, environmental and economic benefits for communities in which it does business.

Through Starbucks commitment to purchasing five percent of its energy for its Company-owned stores in North America from renewable sources, it is helping to prevent the release of 34,209,600 lbs, or about 15,517.4 metric tons of carbon dioxide, a leading global warming gas. This has a similar carbon reduction impact of removing 3,232 average passenger vehicles from US roadways for a year. Retail energy makes up close to 50% of Starbucks total greenhouse gas emissions, so Starbucks decision to purchase renewable energy is a natural starting point. Starbucks continually looks for innovations that can help minimize the environmental footprint of its entire supply chain.

Even subtle changes in the climate globally may significantly impact the quality of life in coffee growing communities and taking action on climate change now is an important part of our social responsibility efforts.
