Standard Chartered

Standard Chartered aspires to be the right partner for its stakeholders and leading by example. The group now employs over 70,000 people worldwide, representing 105 nationalities, in more than 1,400 locations in over 50 countries. The bank generates more than 90% of its profits from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, with balanced income derived from both Wholesale and Consumer Banking. The group is committed to building a sustainable business over the long term and is trusted worldwide for upholding high standards of corporate governance, social responsibility, environmental protection and employee diversity. One of the most prominent initiatives capturing the company’s ambition is the environment and climate change strategy.  For example, at the Clinton Global Initiative in September 2007, Standard Chartered committed US$ 8-10 billion over the next five years to finance clean energy projects, with a focus on wind, hydro, geothermal, solar, biomass and coal bed methane in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.  The Group has set targets to reduce CO2 emissions by the end of 2008 based upon 2006 emissions, from both energy consumption and air travel by 10% per full-time employee.

Standard Chartered is also encouraging individuals from across the globe to make environmental savings through their online pledging initiative which is part of their four marathon series The Greatest Race on Earth: Race for a Living Planet. To date over 900,000 pledges have been made, leading to potential annual environmental savings of over 1.6 billion litres of water, 25,000 tonnes of CO2, 15 million plastic bags and 74,000 trees – highlighting that small changes undertaken by large numbers of people make a worthwhile difference.
