Ontario
The Ontario government has initiated a number of actions that will have a significant impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and will help Canada meet its targets. The actions, particularly in the energy and electricity sector, will address climate change and ensure cleaner air for the people of Ontario.
The government’s initiatives to reduce GHGs and improve air quality in Ontario include:
> Replacing coal-fired generation with cleaner sources of power. The Lakeview Generating Station ceased burning coal in 2005.
> Working to reduce electricity demand across the province by 5% by 2007.
> Releasing its five-point action plan to reduce industrial emissions of smog-causing pollutants and GHGs.
>Requiring gasoline sold in Ontario to contain an average of 5% ethanol by 2007.
