Munich Re Group
Munich Re was founded in 1880, as one of the first independent reinsurance companies, soon after its establishment, Munich Re expanded its activities to foreign countries. Today it is the largest reinsurer in the world: 5,000 insurance companies in around 160 countries rely on its expertise and financial strength. It also serves customers in the fields of primary insurance and asset management.
Munich Re has set up three interdisciplinary working groups to examine its main business areas that will be affected by climate change: reinsurance/underwriting, asset management and new products/markets.
Munich Re is already able to offer tailored insurance for offshore wind farms by linking these projects to its experience in the insurance of offshore oil rigs. The company also developed a pilot underwriting model for the Unterhaching geothermal energy project.
