Manitoba
Manitoba is located in central Canada, bordering Saskatchewan and the US. The easternmost of the three Prairie Provinces, Manitoba has a population of approximately 1.17 million. The Province has been involved in a variety of activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to address climate change effects, ranging from support for fundamental climate change research and development to reducing the emissions from new and existing facilities.
In terms of reducing emissions, some of the more notable efforts include the conversion of Manitoba Hydro’s Selkirk Generation Station from coal to natural gas, the use of procurement policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the advanced energy-efficiency standards adopted in the construction of new capital projects such as the Red River Community College downtown campus.
Manitoba is also moving to a mix of hydro-energy and wind power and exploring the future potential of hydrogen fuel cells with prototype vehicles being driven on the streets of Winnipeg.
