Catalyst

Catalyst (formerly NorskeCanada), is a major North American manufacturer of groundwood printing papers. It has approximately 4,000 employees and the capacity to produce 1.8 million tonnes of publication papers for magazines, catalogues, telephone directories and newspapers annually. The majority of the company’s products are sold to customers in North America, Asia and Western Europe.

Catalyst’s greenhouse gas emissions are strongly related to its energy consumption. Approximately 98% of the company’s direct emissions are derived from the combustion of natural gas and oil. Indirect emissions are produced from electricity purchased by its mills in British Columbia, supplied by BC Hydro.

Since 1990 the company has cut its CO2 emissions by 61%, with estimated savings over the past 10 years of CA$20-30 million due to energy efficiency and related measures. In the long term, Catalyst is looking to increase self-generation in order to reduce dependence on the grid and develop carbon neutral paper.
