Low Carbon Leader Awards

WRI and The Climate Group Launch Green Power Group for Europe
On the 1st of December 2005, World Resources Institute (WRI), in collaboration with The Climate Group, launched the Green Power Market Development Group Europe at the Eleventh UNFCCC Conference of the Parties proceedings in Montreal. The group will run alongside the Green Power Group US which was launched by WRI in 2000.
World Cities Leadership Climate Change Summit
On Tuesday 4th October over 20 major cities from across the developed and developing world met in London to discuss how to adapt to the inevitable effects of climate change and to exercise leadership in reducing emissions in the future.
The Business Forecast
On October 6th and 7th, The Climate Group, in partnership with DEFRA and DTI, convened a climate change conference in London bringing government together with international industry representatives. The aim was to build on the momentum of the G8 Gleneagles summit, driving forward action on a low carbon future.
Governor Schwarzenegger Announces Targets for California
On Wednesday June 1st, as part of UNEP’s World Environment Day celebrations, the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, vowed to tackle global warming in the state. The governor said that the debate on climate change “is over”, and announced a climate change plan with targets to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases to 2000 levels by 2010, 1990 levels by 2020, and 80 % below 1990 levels by 2050. Stressing the potential business benefits from new technology development he said that “together we can meet the needs of both our economy and the environment.”
Melbourne Conference
The Climate Conference: Melbourne 2005 provided a forum for organizations from the private and public sectors to share information on the measures and policies they are implementing to address climate change and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Hosted in partnership with The Victorian State Government, this invitation only event allowed for excellent networking opportunities and high profile coverage of these leadership actions.
The Climate Group Launches in Germany
On November 3 The Climate Group held its German launch event in Berlin featuring German Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw. The lunch took place during the “Climate Change: meeting the challenge together” British/German conference in Berlin.
Conference of the Reducers
The world’s leading reducers of greenhouse gas emissions gathered in Toronto on 12 May for a conference that lent new momentum to the battle against climate change. The conference addressed how to accelerate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions globally. Those who attended the conference represent a powerful coalition of reducers from across the private and public sectors.
The Climate Group UK launch
The Climate Group, a new coalition of the world’s leading reducers of greenhouse gas emissions, was officially launched on 27 April by Prime Minister Tony Blair, marking a significant moment in the effort to draw more businesses and governments into making the emissions reductions necessary to avert dangerous climate change.
