The Greenhouse Indicator
Queensland
The Greenhouse Indicator provides accurate and real time information on greenhouse gases produced each week in Queensland from energy use. The weekly Indicator accounts for about 75% of Queensland’s total energy emissions and 50% of the State’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Remaining emissions come from agriculture, land use, waste, industrial processes, electricity generated on-site by industry and fugitive emissions from coal mining. Unlike Victoria, no regular accurate data is currently available for gas consumption other than gas used for electricity generation in Queensland. Greenhouse gas emissions in Queensland not included by the Indicator are estimated to be on average 1.6 million tonnes per week.
Emissions for the week ending 01 Jan 2009:
1.447 million tonnes CO2e
This year to date: 1.447 million tonnes CO2
Last year to date: 1.46 million tonnes CO2

This week Queensland’s energy emissions grew by 0.5% or 7,000 tonnes from last week. Emissions from coal-fired electricity, which accounted for 90% of Queensland’s generation grew by 0.1% or 1,000 tonnes. Electricity demand fell by 0.4% this week. Emissions from gas-fired generators fell by 2.9% or 1,000 tonnes. Emissions from petroleum products grew by 1.3% or 8,000 tonnes to the highest level seen since February 2008. This week’s Indicator of 1.447 million tonnes is 0.9% lower than the 1.460 million tonnes at a similar stage last year. This week’s Indicator is 117% above the equivalent energy average 1990 weekly emissions.
