Notes on Emission Changes

Emission cuts have been achieved through the purchase of 100% renewable energy for all Sky owned UK sites, and the adoption of energy saving initiatives such as fitting more efficient chilled beam air conditioning systems, implementing solar lighting and presence detection control on the lighting systems, using time controls for the car park lighting as well as campaigning for Sky employees to turn off PCs, TVs, and lights when not in use. Sky Employees are also encouraged to purchase fuel efficient hybrid vehicles with Sky negotiating discounts and contributing £1,300 towards the purchase. Sky also continue to improve engineer van fleet through route planning for efficient driving, the UK’s first commercial trial of Vauxhall Vivaro B30 bio-diesel van, 140 field team managers changing to hybrid vehicles and trialling an electric van.

BSkyB became the world’s first Carbon Neutral media company in 2006. This reflected significant work across the business to measure and reduce CO2 emissions. BSkyB remained Carbon Neutral in the 06/07 year by continuing to make emissions reductions, purchasing 100% renewable energy (through the National Grid) for Sky owned UK sites and by offsetting the remaining, currently unavoidable, CO2 emissions.

Targets

To reduce CO2 emissions to 51,032 tonnes by 2010, which is a 10% reduction from the 2003 baseline.

This target was recalculated in July 2007 to take into account Sky’s acquisition of Easynet. All calculations will be done for the 07/08 year at the end of July 2008.
